Coco Gauff Beats Townsend 6-4, 6-0 at French Open Matches

Coco Gauff opened her french open matches title defence with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Taylor Townsend after dealing with a mini car accident and a dress problem before the match. The American fourth seed advanced in Paris and added another straight-sets result to her French Open record.

Gauff Overcomes A Delayed Start

Gauff said her team had to make alternative travel arrangements after the car she was in became not driveable. She also said the dress she was wearing got stuck before the match, adding another layer of disruption before she stepped on court.

“We got in a mini car accident on our way to the site today,” Gauff said after the win. She added, “There was this pole thing and it was supposed to go down and the police told him [the driver] to go and we ran into it.”

Taylor Townsend Stopped In Round One

The match itself moved quickly once it started. Gauff beat Townsend 6-4, 6-0 to open her title defence, and the scoreline left no doubt about the finish once she settled in.

Before the first ball, though, the day had already gone sideways. “You felt an impact, I spilled my juice all over the car,” she said, describing the ride to the site and the interruption that forced her team into a different plan.

Aryna Sabalenka Also Advances

Sabalenka also moved through the first round in Paris, beating Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-4, 6-2. The world number one has held that spot for the past 84 weeks and carries a 1,255-point lead over Elena Rybakina.

That chase sits behind the top of the draw, but Gauff’s focus stayed on getting past the first round while handling the day’s disruptions. She said, “The retirement happened and right before the match my dress got stuck so my physio was in the bathroom trying to help me take it off.”

“It was an eventful day, but whenever that happens it lets you not think about the match,” Gauff said. For the defending champion, the result mattered most: she is through, and the tournament has already asked for more than a routine opening win.
