Kimberly Birrell Beats Pegula 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 at Roland Garros
kimberly birrell beat No. 5 seed Jessica Pegula 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of Roland Garros in Paris. Birrell had never won a match at the French Open before Tuesday’s upset, and Pegula entered as the World No. 5.
The win took 1 hour and 41 minutes. It was the first major upset of Roland Garros, and Pegula became the highest-ranked player to lose in the opening round.
Birrell Reverses The Match In Paris
Birrell was in trouble early. She lost eight of the opening 10 games and trailed by a set and a break before turning the match around on clay.
The comeback gave her a first career win at Roland Garros and her first Grand Slam victory outside the Australian Open. It also gave her a result that had never come before in Paris.
Pegula's Paris Record Breaks
Pegula’s exit landed against a stretch of recent consistency at the tournament. She had reached at least the third round in each of her previous four appearances in Paris, and this was only her second first-round Grand Slam loss in the previous five years.
Birrell’s own record had been built mostly elsewhere. She had two career Top 10 wins on home soil in Brisbane, beating Daria Kasatkina in 2018 and Emma Navarro last year, and her best previous major result was a third-round run in Melbourne in 2019.
Oliynykova Awaits Next
Birrell’s reward is a second-round meeting with Oleksandra Oliynykova if she advances. Oliynykova reached that spot after beating qualifier Elena Pridankina in her first French Open win.
For Birrell, the result changes the shape of her Roland Garros trip immediately. She walked off court with the biggest win of her major career outside Australia and the rare distinction of sending out the tournament’s highest seed so far.
