Blayke Brailey faces Briton Nikora in Origin debuts on Wednesday

blayke brailey will debut for New South Wales on Wednesday at Accor Stadium, while Briton Nikora makes his Queensland Origin debut on the other side. For the first time in their careers, the two Cronulla teammates will line up against each other in State of Origin.

The matchup is the first time Brailey and Nikora have been separated in Origin after coming through the same system and debuting together in 2019 against the Newcastle Knights. Brailey said the pair spent seven years building that bond at Cronulla, where they moved through the junior grades and stayed close enough that even their partners formed a friendship away from the field.

Cronulla through the grades

“Growing up Brit and me played SG Ball and came through the ranks together,” Brailey said, a line that fits the path both men took before reaching this stage. He added: “It’s funny, he came to Sharks on an open trial and from there I’ve just watched his progression and how good he’s gone and how much he’s improved his game.”

That shared rise matters because it gives Wednesday’s 80-minute match a rare personal edge inside an ordinary selection story. Brailey said, “We’ve both sort of pushed each other. We’ve worked hard and been through some tough times at Sharks, but some great times too,” which is the part of this Origin debut that makes it more than a simple jersey swap.

Blues jersey, Maroons jersey

Brailey said he will be quiet once the whistle goes: “Once Wednesday comes around, I won’t be talking too much but it’ll be fun to see how he goes and he’s an outstanding player and a person too, so I’m really happy for him.” Nikora returned the respect, saying, “He’s been like that since (he was) young, so it’s good to finally see over these last few years, the NRL seeing how good he actually is.”

Nikora also pointed to Brailey’s long run at Cronulla: “He’s a Sharks junior. He’s been here his whole life so when I came down and made the Under-20s team he was already here.” Brailey’s Blues selection follows a strong 12 months that ended with his place in the Australian Kangaroos squad last year, while Nikora already has New Zealand Kiwis experience before this Queensland debut.

Wednesday at Accor Stadium

The practical detail for readers is simple: the same two Sharks careers that started together in 2019 now split across New South Wales and Queensland at Accor Stadium on Wednesday. In a match defined by state loyalty, their first meeting as Origin opponents gives both debuts an added layer of pressure, and Brailey’s own description of their friendship suggests neither will spend long thinking about the other once the game starts.

For Cronulla followers, the split is the story. Two players who grew up in the same junior ranks, stayed close through the Sharks system and reached the representative level by different routes now have to set that history aside for 80 minutes.
