Anna Maxwell Martin Rules Out Amandaland Cameo After Motherland Ended
Anna Maxwell Martin said anna maxwell Martin’s Motherland ended at the right point after three series, and she will not turn up in Amandaland. The line is a clean split for a franchise that has already moved on without its original lead. Her answer leaves Lucy Punch’s spin-off to keep building on its own audience and awards profile.
Three series, two specials
Martin said the original run was complete after three seasons and two Christmas specials, adding, “We weren’t sad because we felt we’d done really good work and were proud.” That matters because Motherland was not left hanging: its final festive outing, Last Christmas, aired in December 2022, and Julia’s mother Marion died in that episode.
Motherland first aired as a pilot in 2016 and launched as a full series in 2017. It later won Best Scripted Comedy at the BAFTAs in 2022, which gives the end point more weight than a routine wrap-up; it closed after a run that had already been rewarded and fully established.
Amandaland keeps moving
Martin said, “I’m so pleased [the spin-off] Amandaland has been a success.” The spin-off centers on Lucy Punch’s Amanda after her divorce and move from Chiswick to South Harlesden, with Philippa Dunne as Anne and Joanna Lumley as Felicity. It returned for its second season earlier this month and was then renewed for a third season.
Amandaland also picked up Best Scripted Comedy at the 2026 BAFTA TV Awards. That gives the series its own separate standing from Motherland, and Martin’s refusal to fold Julia back into the story keeps the newer show from leaning on the old one for a quick ratings lift.
No Julia cameo
Asked whether she would like to make a cameo, Martin answered, “No, it’s their show.” That is the clearest signal yet that the franchise split is being treated as final: one series has ended, the other is moving ahead with its own cast and its own prize recognition. For viewers, the practical takeaway is simple — Motherland remains a closed chapter, while Amandaland now stands on its own.
