Eury Pérez Leaves After Nine Strikeouts in Blue Jays Game

Eury Pérez left the blue jays game in Toronto after his right hamstring spasmed while he was stretching in the dugout, ending a sharp outing after four shutout innings. He had already struck out a season-high nine before leaving, and Miami still had the game tied 1-0 when he exited.

Pérez’s 73-pitch night

The Miami Marlins right-hander allowed only three hits, all singles, and did not walk a batter. He threw 73 pitches, 48 for strikes, before heading out after the fourth.

The injury happened as he was limbering up to come out for the fifth. Pérez sat down in pain, then needed help from a teammate to get down the dugout steps into the clubhouse.

Michael Petersen Takes Over

Michael Petersen replaced him, and Toronto tied the game in the fifth when Nathan Lukes drove an RBI double off Petersen with two outs. The Marlins were still in position after Pérez left, but the margin disappeared quickly.

The sequence also followed a brief flash of tension in the fourth, when Pérez hit Toronto slugger Kazuma Okamoto in the back with a first-pitch, 97 mph fastball. Pérez appeared to stare into the Toronto dugout afterward, and Blue Jays manager John Schneider appeared to yell at him, though the situation did not escalate.

Miami’s One-Run Loss

Miami lost 2-1, turning Pérez’s best strikeout total of the season into a short night and a bullpen problem in the middle of a tight game. The Marlins said the spasm came while he was stretching in the dugout rather than during a pitching motion, and the report does not say whether he will miss additional time.
