Justin Devenny as Mateta wins Crystal Palace's first European title
Jean-Philippe Mateta scored early in the second half and Crystal Palace beat Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in the Conference League final in Leipzig, giving justin devenny a place in the club’s first European title celebration. Dean Henderson later held the trophy aloft as ticker-tape fell.
Leipzig final decides Palace
The win made Crystal Palace the 12th English club to lift one of UEFA’s major European trophies. It also added a continental title to a season that manager Oliver Glasner had already taken into new territory a year ago, when he guided Palace to their first ever major trophy in the FA Cup.
Mateta provided the decisive moment after the break. Palace needed only that one goal, and the scoreline left Rayo Vallecano without a route back into a final they had reached by competing above expectations.
Mitchell on Palace's season
Tyrick Mitchell said the campaign had stretched to 60 games and included setbacks before the team reached its target. “It’s something you dream of. I’m just proud of everyone. We’ve played 60 games this season, we had times when we weren’t winning, we lost a couple of games in this competition, but we got to where we wanted. It’s the same feeling we had when we won the FA Cup, just pure delight.”
His account matched the route Palace took to the final: a long season, a few defeats in the competition, and then a trophy at the end of it. For supporters, the practical change is simple — the club now has a European title to add to its first major domestic one from last year.
Mateta and Henderson in Leipzig
Mateta said the victory felt complete because Palace delivered it for the fans as well as for the squad and manager. “I feel fantastic! I feel fantastic! We did it, now we just have to celebrate and enjoy the party. We gave everything and he [Oliver Glasner] gave everything and that’s why we won today. The fans support me a lot and we did it, of course, for them too.”
Henderson’s lift of the trophy closed the night in Leipzig and fixed Palace’s place in the record books. The result leaves the club with two major trophies in consecutive seasons, and with Mateta’s goal now carrying the value of the final itself.
