Mark Mcgwire Tied As Nick Kurtz's 48-Game Streak Ends
Nick Kurtz's 48-game on-base streak ended Tuesday night in a 4-1 Athletics loss to the Seattle Mariners, and mark mcgwire now shares the top spot only in the record book. Kurtz went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts, ending the run after it matched a franchise mark.
Kurtz Meets McGwire
The streak tied Mark McGwire for the longest on-base run in Athletics history. McGwire reached base in 48 straight games in 1996, and Kurtz had been one game from standing alone before Seattle closed the door.
Kurtz also had the longest on-base streak in the majors since Shin-Soo Choo reached base in 52 consecutive games in 2018. That stretch put the Athletics first baseman in a rare lane even before Tuesday's night ended without a hit or a walk.
Hancock and Speier Finish It
Emerson Hancock handled the early damage. He struck out Kurtz in the first inning, got him to line out to center field in the fourth, and struck him out again in the sixth.
Gabe Speier ended the streak in the eighth inning, striking out Kurtz on his final chance to reach base. The line score stayed stuck at 4-1, and Kurtz finished with his first empty night after a run that had run through a full month of games.
What the Numbers Say
Kurtz still leads the majors with a.437 on-base percentage and 52 walks. He also has eight home runs, 37 RBIs, and a.270 batting average, so one quiet night did not erase the production that carried the streak this far.
Ted Williams owns the big league record for consecutive games reaching base safely at 84 in 1949. Kurtz never got close to that number, but tying McGwire's Athletics mark and running past every major leaguer since Choo in 2018 made Tuesday's end a notable pause in a season built around getting on base.
