Swarthmore College sets $200,000 tuition guarantee for fall 2027

swarthmore college will cover full tuition for students from families earning $200,000 or less starting in fall 2027. The tuition guarantee does not extend to room and board, and the college said its financial aid method will stay the same when the program begins.

Valerie Smith said the program is meant to make the college’s affordability message simpler. In a statement released by Swarthmore on Monday, she said, "We recognize the complexities families face when navigating the costs of college, and one of our goals for the Swarthmore Tuition Guarantee is simplifying our message on affordability".

Smith also said families above the new income line may still receive aid. She said, "We also want to demonstrate to families that — even if you’re earning $200,000, $250,000, $300,000 per year and, in some cases, more — you may qualify for financial aid at Swarthmore."

The college said, "We hope it communicates to families that their financial circumstances are not a barrier to a transformational liberal arts education at Swarthmore." Swarthmore has about 1,700 students and already provides aid to more than 55% of them.

Swarthmore Tuition Guarantee

The program starts against a high-price baseline. For the 2026-2027 academic year, tuition is $72,722, housing is $11,676, food is $10,890 and the student activities fee is $482, for a total cost of over $95,000 before aid.

Swarthmore said its aid packages already take into account the number of children currently attending college and the cost of living where a family lives. Its financial aid methodology and application process will not change when the new program begins, and the program is open to domestic students only. International applicants may still be eligible for aid that covers all of their tuition and other expenses.

Swarthmore Aid Budget

The college’s financial aid program is fully covered by its endowment, and its aid budget will rise to $71 million in the 2026-27 academic year. Swarthmore said it is part of a broader trend in higher education to make academic opportunities more attainable, pointing to similar affordability initiatives at Penn, Temple, Bryn Mawr, Lehigh, Carnegie Mellon and Dickinson.

The change lands after Swarthmore received 13,029 applications for the 2026 freshman class and admitted about 7.4% of applicants. Families deciding whether to apply or enroll now have a clearer cutoff on tuition, but the college kept its broader aid review in place, so the $200,000 line does not end the conversation for households above it.
