Karen Gillan Shrinking Season 4 Adds Entire Main Cast Back
karen gillan shrinking season 4 is moving ahead with the entire main cast back, extending a series that was originally shaped as a three-season arc. For a show built around ensemble rhythms, that keeps the writing model intact instead of resetting it.
Brett Goldstein’s cast-first script
Brett Goldstein said the show has kept changing as the cast locked in. “It changes with the cast — once you fall in love with them and you start writing for them.”
Goldstein wrote on all three seasons of Shrinking, and he described the series as a balancing act between season-long structure, episode-level storytelling and full arcs for every character. “We’re trying to tell a season-long story, but also trying to tell an episodic story — and we’re also trying to service every single character to give them a full arc.”
That approach explains why the fourth season matters: the show is not just being extended, it is keeping the same ensemble engine that shaped the first three seasons. Goldstein also started work on Shrinking in 2021 while continuing to work on Ted Lasso, saying, “I don't know how I do it. I think my brain works better when there's 300 things going on at once than if it were just one.”
Derek and Summer stayed
Ted McGinley’s Derek was introduced in season one as the happy-go-lucky husband to Liz, and Goldstein said, “You bring him in at the end of a scene, he says an amazing line and he walks out.”
Rachel Stubington’s Summer, a friend of Jimmy’s teenage daughter Alice, followed a similar path inside the writing room. Goldstein said, “I don't know if we had a plan for Summer, but she was so fucking funny.”
Those examples show how Shrinking has rewarded characters the team found useful after they arrived, rather than treating the original setup as fixed. With the full main cast now returning for season four, the series is doubling down on that method instead of trading it for a new structure.
Jimmy’s story stays open
Season three ended with Jimmy’s grief over the death of his wife wrapped up and a long-delayed date with Sofi, played by Cobie Smulders, finally in motion. That gives the fourth season a cleaner launch point than the show had at the start.
Bill Lawrence, Brett Goldstein and Jason Segel originally envisioned Shrinking as a three-season series, so the new order pushes past the shape they first designed. Goldstein’s return as Louis — the man responsible for Jimmy’s wife Tia’s fatal car accident, who arrived in season two after serving time and seeking redemption — keeps one of the show’s most loaded relationships in play as the cast comes back together for another run.
