Jeremy Jacquet Rejects Man Utd, Chelsea for Liverpool Move

jeremy jacquet turned down interest from Manchester United and Chelsea before agreeing to join Liverpool in February. The 20-year-old defender stayed with Rennes until a summer move, and he said Liverpool’s history and the project offered to him drove the choice.

Jacquet Chooses Liverpool

Jacquet said the move did not happen quickly. He told Ouest France that he had been talking with Liverpool for a long time, even after hearing claims that the club arrived late in the process.

“I won’t say it happened quickly, because I took my time with this big step. But I quickly saw myself at Liverpool. I heard they came in at the last minute, but that’s not true. I’d been talking with them for a long time.”

He added that the club’s history weighed heavily in his decision, along with the project laid out for him. When asked whether Manchester United were among the sides involved, he said there had been interest from “other clubs that haven’t been mentioned” and that “It didn’t happen in a week.”

Man Utd And Chelsea Miss Out

The choice leaves Liverpool with a defender who has only limited Ligue 1 experience and has not played in European competition or for France’s senior team. He has been capped only up to Under-21 level for France, which makes the transfer a bet on potential rather than a finished product.

That gamble came after Liverpool paid a reported £55m up front and £5m more in add-ons for Jacquet. Arne Slot called him “a very big talent” when Liverpool signed him in February, and also pointed to the competition for his signature as a sign of the club’s work in the market.

Jacquet said Chelsea’s squad depth helped push him away from Stamford Bridge. He put more weight on what Liverpool offered around development, saying training with Virgil van Dijk would be huge and that Ibrahima Konate could help him settle in.

Liverpool Waits On Recovery

The move has not yet delivered him onto the pitch. Jacquet suffered a serious shoulder injury shortly after agreeing the Liverpool move and had not played since February at the time of the article.

For Liverpool, the immediate gain is control of a player who picked them over two major rivals. For Jacquet, the next step is simpler: get healthy, get training minutes, and turn a high-cost move into a regular role at Anfield.
