Jermall Charlo Added to July 26 Tszyu-Spence Card
jermall charlo is set to join the Tszyu-Spence undercard in Australia on July 26, adding another American name to a card already built around Tim Tszyu and Errol Spence Jnr. The move gives the event more depth and points Charlo toward a return against an Australian opponent.
Ronnie Shields on the card
Ronnie Shields said on Friday that talks were underway to get Charlo onto the July 26 event. He added, "Today I found out ‘Mal may be fighting on the card too" and said, "I haven’t talked to anybody [officially] yet. It’s just my thinking that maybe I can get him on that card."
Shields also said, "it’s not 100 per cent just yet, but there is a possibility he will be fighting on the card." He said there was talk of Charlo maybe fighting in August, but he was pushing for the Australia date instead.
Australian opponent in view
Shields said Charlo would fight "Definitely against an Australian. I don’t know yet [who], I just found out it’s a possibility and they’re looking for opponents now. They’re going to let me know if it can work out." That leaves the opponent spot open while promoters seek the right local fighter for the card most likely to land in Sydney.
Charlo enters the discussion with a 34-0 record and recent experience at middleweight and super middleweight. He is ranked No. 4 by the WBA at super middleweight and No. 6 by the WBC, and Shields said he had been training really well for the last month.
Tszyu, Spence, and Jermell
The July 26 show already carried weight because Tszyu and Spence were set for the headline fight. Charlo adds another layer because he is Jermell Charlo’s twin brother, and Jermell walked away from a Las Vegas headliner against Tszyu three years ago.
For the card, the immediate change is simple: one more high-profile American fighter is in play, and the co-main slot is likely to go to an Australian. For Charlo, the push is even clearer, with Shields saying the goal is to get him back into another world title shot.
