Mitsubishi Pajero 2026 returns with 2027 debut set for Q3

Mitsubishi has brought the mitsubishi pajero 2026 back into focus by confirming the nameplate will return as a new 2027 model, with a global debut set for the third quarter of 2026. Pre-orders are expected to open shortly after that debut, and first deliveries are expected in December.

The timing points to an Australian showroom arrival before Christmas. For buyers in the large SUV segment, the first real question is how closely the new model will track the Triton ute underneath and how far Mitsubishi will lean into diesel power at launch.

Mitsubishi and the Triton platform

The new Pajero is understood to ride on the same ladder-frame platform as the current Triton ute and to be built in Thailand. It is almost certain to carry over the Triton's 2.4-litre twin-turbo-diesel engine and SuperSelect II full-time 4x4 system.

Dealer sources say the Pajero could use an eight-speed automatic transmission instead of the Triton's six-speed automatic transmission. That would place the new SUV slightly differently from the ute it shares bones with, even as the core mechanical package appears closely linked.

Ford Everest and Toyota Prado

The Pajero is expected to compete directly with the Ford Everest and Toyota Prado. The 250 Series Toyota Prado starts north of $73,000 before on-road costs, while the updated 2026 Ford Everest starts from $60K drive-away and the Isuzu MU-X starts at $55,900 plus on-roads in 4x4 guise.

That pricing band frames the market Mitsubishi is re-entering. The company also has its 10-year warranty expected to be a selling point, while diesel will almost certainly lead the launch and hybrid powertrains are understood to be in development.

Melbourne prototype sightings

A camouflaged prototype was spotted in Melbourne's CBD as recently as March, adding to other sightings in Australia in March and earlier in the year. Mitsubishi's return of the Pajero now moves from road-test speculation to a dated launch plan, with the main milestones already set out.

Buyers watching the segment now have the clearest next steps: watch for the third-quarter debut, then the pre-order window that is expected to open soon after, before deliveries begin in December.
