Anthony Gordon Spanish: Barcelona Sign Forward From Newcastle United
Anthony Gordon Spanish has landed at Barcelona after Newcastle United said the forward signed for the La Liga champions for a significant undisclosed fee. The move ends his three-and-a-half years at Newcastle and takes him from a club he joined in January 2023 to the Spanish champions.
Newcastle to Barcelona
Gordon leaves after 152 appearances and 39 goals in all competitions for Newcastle United. His final campaign produced 17 goals, including ten in Europe, and he finished as the club's top scorer across all competitions.
The transfer closes a run that began with his move from Everton in January 2023. In that spell, he went from new arrival to senior England international, making his debut at Wembley against Brazil in March and then representing England at Euro 2024.
Gordon's Newcastle record
He also collected the Player of the Tournament award at the 2023 European Under-21 Championships, and his impact on Newcastle's 2025 Carabao Cup final run was direct. Gordon played in every game on the route to Wembley and scored vital goals in both legs of the semi-final victory over Arsenal.
His numbers show a sharp rise after an early breakthrough season. He scored 11 times in 35 Premier League appearances in the following campaign after his debut year, then moved on to a final season that put him at the top of Newcastle's scoring chart.
How Newcastle framed it
Eddie Howe said Newcastle were disappointed to lose Gordon from the squad, but understood it was a big opportunity for him. He added that Gordon had been a big part of the club's success in recent years and pointed to his development into an England international as evidence of the work he put in with support from the club.
Ross Wilson also praised him as a fantastic professional, saying the relationship between Gordon, Howe, the players and staff had been excellent throughout. For Newcastle, the departure removes a forward who delivered goals in Europe, finished as top scorer last season and helped drive a cup run that ended a 70-year wait.
Barcelona get a player who has already delivered for club and country, while Newcastle lose one of the defining figures of their recent rise. Gordon said the club gave him a sense of belonging and identity, and he added that he will be a fan for the rest of his life.
