Mike Gansey Emerges Among Sixers’ Remaining Front-Office Candidates
The Sixers’ search for a basketball operations chief has narrowed, and mike gansey remains among the attractive candidates still available. The hire is meant to bring good sense and stability to a franchise that has cycled through front-office and coaching changes for roughly a quarter-century.
Myers Frames Sixers Search
Bob Myers laid out the task on May 14 after Daryl Morey’s firing, saying, “the person we hire will handle that.” He also said, “No, this will be a two-man job, a difficult one, and their first consideration should be a vital concept that the Sixers have ignored for too long: culture.”
That setup leaves the next executive with a broad mandate. Josh Harris still has Morey and general manager Elton Brand on the payroll, but the new hire is expected to help reshape the roster and steer the operation with a steadier hand.
Gansey, Lloyd, Nelson
The remaining list includes Mike Gansey of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Mike Lloyd of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Jameer Nelson from inside the organization. Gansey stands out because he is one of the outside candidates still in play while the Sixers also keep an internal option alive.
Philadelphia was denied permission to speak to Onsi Saleh, the Atlanta Hawks’ general manager, which trimmed one avenue from the search. That leaves the front office looking at a smaller pool and puts more weight on the people still available.
Quarter-Century Of Turmoil
The search sits against a long run of instability. The Sixers fired Morey, Nick Nurse, Brett Brown and Doc Rivers, hired Bryan Colangelo, and saw Sam Hinkie walk away before they fired him.
That history reaches back to July 2001, when Pat Croce tried and failed to run a power play on Ed Snider. The next choice now carries the job of helping stop a cycle the franchise has not solved for a quarter-century.
