Elizabeth Rancourt said on Wednesday that she is in her TVA Sports role because she is the best person for it, not because she is a woman. The host of the Canadiens de Montréal games at TVA Sports made the remark while the network continues its playoff coverage.
Julie Marcoux and Rancourt
That line puts her place in the hockey broadcast rotation in direct terms: she is arguing for merit inside a role that still draws attention because of who occupies it.
Rancourt also said she wants to see more female analysts in the field. She added that the reaction from viewers has included messages about how good it feels to see a woman in the coverage dynamic.
Canadiens playoff coverage
During the current Canadiens de Montréal playoff run, she said she has received many messages and questions. For TVA Sports, that makes her one of the most visible faces of a coverage window that tends to magnify every on-air choice.
Rancourt said she is very busy and often away from home, and that she depends on support to keep going. Si je n’avais pas cette aide-là, je ne pourrais pas faire ça et me sentir bien,” she said. She is the mother of 2 young boys, and she said that without that help she could not do her job and still feel well.
TVA Sports and home
Her comments land in the middle of the Canadiens de Montréal playoffs, when TVA Sports is carrying a heavy on-air load and the audience is paying close attention to who is doing the talking. Rancourt’s message is plain: she wants the job judged on performance, not gender, while also making clear that the schedule only works because of family support at home.
