Sydney Swans Face Richmond at SCG in Saturday Test

The Sydney Swans take a strong SCG record into Saturday’s meeting with Richmond. Sydney has won all five home games there this season, while Richmond arrives for only its third visit to the ground since 2016.

Adem Yze on SCG form

Adem Yze put the focus on the venue before the matchup, saying, "Their form at the SCG is really strong, the size of the ground is different" at this morning's press conference. Richmond coach knows his side is heading into a place where Sydney has won eight of its last nine games at the SCG dating back to last year.

That home record sits on top of a fast and aggressive handball game that has driven Sydney’s 2026 campaign. The Swans hunt on turnover and use direct handballs to move the footy quickly and dangerously, which is the pattern Richmond will have to break if it wants to slow the game down.

Matthew Richardson on handball pressure

Matthew Richardson pointed to that part of Sydney’s game when he said, "You’ve got to be careful not to be bees to a honeypot against Sydney because they’ll get out by hand…you just got to corral," on Talking Tigers. Richmond conceded the least amount of points in the AFL last week, so the challenge is not just stopping Sydney’s movement, but doing it without losing the defensive discipline that carried over from that performance.

The venue history adds another layer. This will be Richmond’s third visit to the SCG since 2016, with its last game there on May 27, 2022 and its previous Moore Park visit on August 27, 2016, while the two clubs have mostly met elsewhere since then — five times at the MCG, twice at Marvel Stadium, once at the SCG, once at the Gabba and once at Adelaide Oval.

Richmond’s rare SCG return

For Richmond, the practical task is simple enough to state and hard to execute: handle Sydney’s handball game, adjust to the different dimensions, and do it on a ground the Swans have controlled all season. Saturday gives Yze’s side a small sample of a venue it has scarcely seen in recent years, against a home team that has made the SCG a clear advantage.
