Harry Kyle Debuts as Sydney Rest Brodie Grundy — Sydney Vs Richmond

Sydney vs Richmond turned into a team-sheet story on Saturday, with the Swans resting Brodie Grundy and handing Harry Kyle a debut at the SCG. Sydney also made room for Peter Ladhams in the ruck, while Richmond brought back Dion Prestia for the round 12 meeting.

Harry Kyle At The SCG

Kyle, a Swans Academy product, was the new name in Sydney’s side as the club named its final team for the 1.15pm AEST start. Hayden McLean and Harry Cunningham also returned, giving Sydney three changes around a match it had to use to steady after its second defeat of the season.

The Swans had lost their grip on top spot after being outwitted by Geelong, and they came into this one trying to reset at home. Sydney had won eight of its past nine home games, which kept the SCG as the clearest place to recover quickly.

Brodie Grundy And Peter Ladhams

Grundy’s rest pushed Ladhams into the main ruck role. That change sat at the center of Sydney’s selection because the Swans were taking on Richmond without Callum Mills, Malcolm Rosas or Tom Papley, all sidelined by injury.

It also gave the Swans a direct look at how they would cover one of their most important positions without their regular No. 1 ruckman. For a side that had spent the past four weeks being met by opponents trying to block the corridor and slow its forward-handball game, the ruck mix mattered as much as any forward line tweak.

Richmond’s SCG Record

Richmond’s team changes were smaller but still important. Dion Prestia returned from a calf issue, Sam Banks and Liam Fawcett came back into the side, and Tom Burton was omitted.

The Tigers also lost Jonty Faull to concussion and Tom Lynch to a throat injury, which narrowed their options further before a ground where they have struggled. Richmond had won only once in its past 10 matches at the SCG, even after a stirring win over Essendon before the trip to Sydney.

That leaves the Swans with a home assignment that asks more than just whether Kyle handles his first senior game. Sydney needed to settle its changes quickly, because the selection mix, the missing senior names and Richmond’s poor recent SCG record all fed into one afternoon that was already carrying more weight than a normal round 12 fixture.
