Fran Hennessy Targets 21-Year-Old Undisputed Crown Push

Fran Hennessy says she wants to become the youngest-ever undisputed world champion, and the 21-year-old expects her path to run through Cherneka Johnson. She is unbeaten in eight professional fights and believes the title shot could land before long.

Hennessy Eyes Johnson

Hennessy is the WBC mandatory challenger at 118lbs, which puts her in position for a shot when the belt situation opens up. She said, "I think Cherneka’s got a fight lined up already… but definitely, we’ll be pushing for that fight to happen. I’d love to be the youngest-ever undisputed world champion."

Her target is specific. Gabriela Fundora became the youngest-ever fighter, male or female, to hold all four major titles at once in November 2024 at 22 years old, and Hennessy wants to beat that mark within the next 12 months.

Wembley Arena Return

Hennessy is on the undercard of Adam Azim vs Steve Claggett this Saturday at Wembley Arena, staying active while the title picture develops. She described Aurora De Persio as the perfect opponent to keep active against there, and her team believes a WBC title shot might come at the end of this year or early next year.

That schedule sits against a short but busy rise. In January, she won a majority decision over Ellie Bouttell after being elevated to the main event when Adam Azim’s showdown fell through. Hennessy said that night was a new experience, adding, "I was very nervous, and I think it was to do with being a headliner for the first time. I hadn’t experienced that before, and I’m only 21 years old, but I’ve now learnt how to take all of that in my stride."

January Lessons

Her January win did more than preserve her unbeaten record. It also showed she can handle a late switch in status and still get through a tough fight, which she called "a dogfight." She said, "It was incredible; it was a great fight; it was a dogfight, which I’m happy to have been involved in. I experienced all different things in that last fight."

That run has changed how she approaches the next step. Hennessy said, "Back then, I put a lot of pressure on myself, whereas now I’m just a happy fighter," and she expects to be ready when the title fight is ordered. If Cherneka Johnson keeps hold of the belts, Hennessy’s route is set: keep winning, stay in the mandatory line at 118lbs, and take the shot when it comes.
