Dennis Hull Dies at 81 After Eight Seasons With Blackhawks

dennis hull died at 81 on Saturday morning, closing the book on a career that stretched across eight seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks. The team said he left lasting contributions to the franchise and to the game itself.

Blackhawks Chairman & CEO Danny Wirtz said Hull’s career was built on scoring ability and consistency, and that he was known for immense skill, toughness and intelligence. Hull also carried the nickname the Silver Jet.

Blackhawks Remember Dennis Hull

Wirtz said, "The Chicago Blackhawks are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dennis Hull earlier this morning. Dennis enjoyed a distinguished career built on his scoring ability and consistency, leaving lasting contributions not only to the Blackhawks franchise, but to the game itself."

He added, "Known around the league for his immense skill, toughness and intelligence, Dennis was as dominant on the ice as he was beloved off it. He often drew on his sharp wit and sense of humor to keep the locker room loose, while his warmth and humility made everyone he met feel welcome."

That framing puts Hull’s value in two places at once. He was productive enough to matter over a long run with Chicago, and he was remembered as a presence who changed the room as much as the score sheet. The club also said his lasting contributions reached beyond the franchise.

Bobby Hull And The Silver Jet

Hull played for the Blackhawks from 1964 to 1977. His brother Bobby Hull also played for the team and was nicknamed the Golden Jet, a link that tied Dennis Hull to one of the franchise’s most familiar names.

The Blackhawks also said he was beloved off the ice. Wirtz said Hull’s sharp wit helped keep the locker room loose, while his warmth and humility made everyone he met feel welcome.

On January 7, 2019, former Blackhawks forward Dennis Hull was honored during One More Shift before a game between the Calgary Flames and the Chicago Blackhawks at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. Saturday’s death returns that recognition to the center of his story: a player remembered by the organization, by teammates and by fans who had already seen how much he meant to the team.

Wirtz closed the team’s statement with condolences to Hull’s family, friends and teammates, and to the many fans who adored him.
