Elections BC finds no deliberate violations in Surrey-Guildford Bc Election

Elections BC said its bc election investigation into Surrey-Guildford found no evidence of deliberate violations in the 2024 provincial vote. The agency said Friday it was confident the riding's voting was free, fair, and secure after a complaint from the defeated B.C. Conservative candidate.

The review covers a race won by New Democrat Garry Begg by 22 votes over Honveer Singh Randhawa, a margin that helped shape the NDP government's one-seat majority. Elections BC said the evidence available was enough to assess the allegations and determine there was no deliberate attempt to influence the result through non-compliance with the Election Act.

Surrey-Guildford race

Randhawa petitioned the B.C. Supreme Court to challenge the result, arguing that voting involved non-residents, people casting multiple ballots, and care home residents voting by mail even though they did not know there was an election. He later withdrew that court challenge, leaving Elections BC's review as the clearest public account of what the agency found in the riding.

Elections BC said all processes, including voting by mail, were in accordance with B.C.'s Election Act and that voters were able to exercise their constitutional right to vote. The agency also said there were a few administrative errors in the provincial vote, but none affected the outcome.

Investigation summary

The summary released Friday said that in some cases the evidence did not support the allegations and no further action was taken. In other cases, Elections BC said the evidence suggested there may have been incidents of non-compliance, but the evidence did not meet the standard to refer the matter to prosecution or the non-compliance was procedural in nature.

People involved in those non-compliance cases were issued letters explaining the requirement for eligible voters to cast their ballots. Elections BC said it released the summary because of significant public interest in Surrey-Guildford and false narratives that had circulated about the issue.
