Jaÿ-Z Draws 200 to Secret Philly Jay Z Concert Before Roots Picnic
Jaÿ-Z turned a Friday-night jay z concert at the Foundry in Fishtown into a tightly held warm-up for Roots Picnic, drawing several hundred fans into the club-within-a-club at the Fillmore. He is set to headline the festival on Saturday night with The Roots as his backing band.

The invite-only feel started on Thursday, when members of Jaÿ-Z’s fan club appeared to have been emailed and told to show up at the Fillmore and keep the event quiet. By Friday night, the room had the air of a private industry test run rather than a standard club date.
Júnior Coimbra put the scale at “Only 200 people in attendance!” after the set, and another attendee called it “What an epic night,” while describing the show as cloak-and-dagger. Jaÿ-Z arrived about 11 p.m. and played for about an hour, opening with Hovi Baby from The Blueprint 2.
Beyoncé and Questlove
One video showed Beyoncé watching and dancing at the side of the stage. Another post placed Dave Chappelle in the crowd with Adam Blackstone, Deon Cole, and Questlove, giving the small-room set the kind of guest list that usually belongs to a much larger bill.
Júnior Coimbra later wrote, “HOV with @theroots was nothing short of spectacular, a nice preview of what’s coming tomorrow at the rootspicnic,” and added, “Yup, tonight at The Roots Picnic is going to be insane!” The fan-club account also said videos were circulating “even [though] phones were [supposed to be] locked in those [Yondr] bags.”
Saturday and July 2026
Roots Picnic was expected to be Jaÿ-Z’s first festival appearance of any kind since 2019, which makes the Philadelphia stop more than a casual surprise. He had only two tour stops on his 2026 calendar: the Roots Picnic on Saturday and three nights at Yankee Stadium in July.
Friday night was the rare part. Saturday night is the test of scale, with The Roots behind him and a much larger audience waiting outside the Foundry.
