Ray Ford Could Be Built in Houston After Saturday Win

ray ford could leave Saturday night with more than the WBC junior-featherweight title. Eddie Hearn said Matchroom will consider building the 27-year-old as a Houston attraction if he beats O'Shaquie Foster at the Fertitta Center. Ford has moved from Camden, New Jersey to Houston, but he still needs a fight that turns that address into a following.

Hearn’s Houston Plan

Hearn did not hide the basic formula. Ford has not built a consistent fanbase, and the promoter said the city could become the place where that changes if the fight goes his way. He also said Ford could move into the division’s top conversation with Foster and Emanuel Navarrete with a win.

“Ray hasn’t built a massive fanbase,” Hearn said. “He’s from Camden, New Jersey. But what he is is really good, so you have to do something [as a promoter to create opportunities].” That is the practical test in Houston: a win, a crowd, and a reason to come back with the same fighter again.

Fertitta Center Crowd

The card is set for a 5,500-capacity crowd, and Hearn said the arena is the right size for boxing. “It’s exactly the kind of arena you want for boxing – 5,500, perfect size,” he said. “We’ll be sold out.” Saturday’s card is the first the promoter has staged in Houston, and he said Houston has not had a fight for some time.

That gives the night a narrow focus. Ford is 27 and already holds one world title history, having won his first belt against Otabek Kholmatov before losing his WBA featherweight title fight against Nick Ball in 2024. He moved up in weight after that defeat, and the rebuild now runs through Foster, the defending champion from Houston.

Ford, Foster, And The Division

Hearn’s pitch is about more than one night. “Neither of them are massive ticket sellers,” he said of Ford and Foster, which is why the location matters as much as the matchup. He added, “The winner – if Foster wins, he can come back here and fight every time,” and, “Ray, maybe he fights in Houston [hereafter].”

The promoter also pointed to the wider bill, which is set to showcase Zaquin Moses and Omari Jones to a new crowd. But the main decision still belongs to Ford: beat Foster in Houston, and Matchroom may have a fighter it can keep building there. Lose, and the city stays Foster’s home base instead.
