Vivid Fireworks Replaces 83-Dronе Darling Harbour Collapse

Vivid fireworks will replace the remaining drone shows after 83 drones plunged into Darling Harbour during the vivid fireworks performance Star-Bound on Monday night. The festival said the swap keeps the program moving at the same Darling Harbour times while it finishes a technical and safety review.

Star-Bound Falls Apart

83 drones dropped into the waters of Cockle Bay and six landed on a boardwalk after unforeseen technical difficulties disrupted the show. No injuries were reported, and four performances were cancelled on Tuesday and Wednesday as operators reviewed the system.

Vivid Sydney then cancelled all remaining drone shows scheduled for the next two weeks. In a statement, the festival said, "Public safety remains the absolute priority and all decisions have been guided by expert technical and regulatory advice."

Dyfan Rhys On The Failure

Dyfan Rhys, Skymagic's head of operations and production, said early indications showed there was no foul play present. He also said the drones that encountered problems hit the geofence boundary and shut down to preserve the safety zone.

Skymagic said the issue came from "an unforeseen change in the radio frequency environment occurring after take-off," which compromised the positional accuracy of the fleet. The event uses 1,000 purpose-built drones, so a failure of this scale leaves little room for a partial recovery once the safety systems trigger.

Darling Harbour Swaps To Fireworks

The drone show had been scrapped last year amid crowd control concerns before returning this year as Australia’s most extensive event of its kind. That return made the Monday failure more damaging for the aerial program, because it turned a flagship component into a festival-wide change in a single week.

Vivid said the fireworks will now complement the Laser Lightfall experience in Darling Harbour at the times previously scheduled for drone shows, adding another layer of spectacle to Vivid Sydney’s celebrations. For visitors already planning around those slots, the practical move is simple: show up for fireworks instead of drones, with the schedule kept in the same place and at the same time.
