Raheem Sterling arrested after Lamborghini crash on M3 motorway

Raheem Sterling was arrested on Thursday morning after a Lamborghini collided with barriers on the M3 southbound near the Minley Interchange. Hampshire constabulary said the 31-year-old was detained on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs, driving dangerously, possession of a class C drug and failing to provide a specimen.

Hampshire constabulary on M3 report

“Just before 9am on Thursday (28 May), we received reports that a Lamborghini was in collision with barriers on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange.” The force said no other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported.

“The driver, a 31-year-old man from Berkshire, has been arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs, driving dangerously, possession of a class C drug and failing to provide a specimen.” He was later bailed while inquiries continue.

Steering through another setback

Sterling, a former England and Chelsea winger now playing for Feyenoord in the Netherlands, had left Chelsea by mutual consent in January. He had 18 months left on a Chelsea deal worth £325,000 a week, a reminder of how quickly a player’s off-pitch situation can move from contract talk to police reporting.

A source close to Sterling said he had been under “immeasurable psychological strain” after an “extremely tough couple of years,” adding that he moved to the Netherlands to “escape and rediscover his love for the game” but that “the negativity followed.” The same source said there is no “proof of anything in his system,” which sits in sharp contrast to the police list of suspected offences.

What follows for Sterling

The immediate consequence is straightforward: Sterling is not facing a loose media cloud but a live police inquiry with multiple alleged offences attached to a single motorway crash. For a player who has already shifted clubs and countries within the last few months, the bigger issue now is whether this arrest becomes a wider legal problem or stays contained to the M3 incident.
