Derek Williams Leads Miami Past Troy 10-5 in Troy Baseball
Miami beat troy baseball 10-5 on Friday night at Condron Family Ballpark, taking control early and closing with a five-run eighth inning. The result pushed Miami into the winner’s bracket of the NCAA Gainesville Regional and left Troy headed to an elimination game on Sunday afternoon.
Derek Williams Opens the Gap
Derek Williams set the pace with a home run, then finished with two hits and three RBI in Miami’s win. Vance Sheahan also went deep with a solo home run, giving Miami enough power to build a lead Troy never fully erased.
Miami jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning. Troy answered with three runs across the fourth and fifth innings, but the gap stayed manageable until Miami separated late.
Miami's Late Separation
The decisive stretch came in the eighth, when Miami scored five runs to put the game out of reach. Before that, Miami added an insurance run in the seventh inning on a throwing error by the Troy catcher, a mistake that extended the margin and kept the pressure on Troy’s defense.
Miami improved to 39-18 with the victory. The Hurricanes entered the NCAA Tournament as the No. 2 seed in the Gainesville Regional, making their 51st appearance in the event, and the win kept that run alive at a site hosted by Florida at Condron Family Ballpark.
Troy's Elimination Path
Troy now has to win to stay alive after opening the regional with the 10-5 loss. Miami’s path changed the moment Williams and Sheahan turned the game with power, while Troy’s margin for error narrowed to one game on Sunday afternoon.
Florida beat Miami 22-10 on Saturday night, which sent Miami into the rematch with Troy under elimination pressure. The loser leaves Gainesville, and Troy has already spent its cushion.
