NYPD Investigates Two Brooklyn Sewer Exits Overnight Friday — Nbc News
Nbc news reports police investigated videos of two groups seen exiting manholes in Brooklyn overnight Friday. One group involved eight people in Williamsburg at around 1 a.m.; about an hour later, seven people emerged in Gravesend.
The two incidents happened at opposite ends of the borough, and police said it was not known Friday evening whether they were connected. The Department of Environmental Protection inspected the Gravesend sewer infrastructure and said it found no damage.
Williamsburg And Gravesend
In Williamsburg, police said eight people were caught on video entering the sewer system at Heyward Street and Bedford Avenue at around 1 a.m. The group exited a short time later and took off in a car, according to police.
About an hour later, seven people emerged from the sewer system near McDonald Avenue and Collin Place in Gravesend. Surveillance video from the Flatbush Scoop showed the group coming out of the manhole one by one before gathering near two parked cars. The group appeared to remove soiled clothing and clean themselves off near the vehicles.
NYPD 62nd Precinct
The NYPD's 62nd Precinct posted on X about the Gravesend incident and said the area is "safe and free of hazards." Officers were also captured on Citizen app video working on the Gravesend mystery on Friday afternoon, while a large police scene took over Williamsburg on Friday evening.
Friday's incidents followed a man's overnight disappearance into the sewer system in Dyker Heights around six months ago. The DEP said entering sewers is both illegal and extremely dangerous, warning that they can contain noxious and potentially deadly gases, unstable surfaces, flooding risks and confined spaces. It said members of the public should never enter a pipe, drain, catch basin, manhole or outfall.
