Karmelo Anthony Jury Selection Begins In Collin County Trial
karmelo anthony's murder trial is set to move into jury selection Monday at the Collin County Courthouse in McKinney, Texas, with opening arguments scheduled for Thursday if a jury is seated. He has been indicted on first-degree murder in the death of Austin Metcalf, the 11th grader stabbed at a Frisco Independent School District stadium on April 2, 2025.
Collin County Courthouse
Jury selection is scheduled for Monday and Wednesday in McKinney, putting the case on a formal trial track after the killing that drew wide attention in a school sports setting. Judge John Roach has imposed a gag order and barred electronics, including cellphones, from the courtroom.
No photography, video recording, audio recording or livestreaming will be allowed during the proceedings. The restrictions leave the courtroom tightly controlled as the case moves from indictment to trial.
Frisco Track Meet Death
Anthony was 17 when the stabbing happened during a track and field championship involving multiple schools in Frisco. According to the arrest report, responding officers said multiple witnesses told them the altercation began after Metcalf told Anthony to move out from under their team's tent.
A witness in the report said Anthony allegedly reached inside his bag and said, "Touch me and see what happens," before Metcalf grabbed him to move him. Anthony then allegedly pulled out what the witness described as a black knife, stabbed Metcalf once in the chest and ran away.
Bond And Court Rules
Anthony was initially held on $1 million bond before a Collin County judge reduced it to $250,000. He was ordered to remain on house arrest, stay under supervision by a parent or designated adult at all times, avoid contact with Metcalf's family and seek prior court approval before leaving the house.
The courtroom limits and gag order mirror the intensity around the case, but the next immediate step is narrower: jury selection in Collin County, then opening arguments on Thursday if the panel is in place. Anthony's mother, Kala Hayes, said before the gag order that her family had been under attack and that her son deserves the same rights under the law that everyone is afforded to.
