Edwin Arroyo Promoted as Reds Place De La Cruz on IL

The Reds moved edwin arroyo to the majors Monday and put Elly De La Cruz on the 10-day injured list, a roster shuffle driven by a strained right hamstring. Arroyo will make his major league debut after Cincinnati’s top shortstop left Sunday’s game early in obvious pain at first base.

De La Cruz Leaves Sunday

De La Cruz suffered the injury in Sunday’s game, then underwent an MRI that showed the strain. Cincinnati has not given a timeline for his return or the grade of the hamstring injury, so the club is working without a clear endpoint for a player who had been building one of the best seasons of his young career.

The injury arrived after he pulled up at first base and exited in obvious pain. That left the Reds to protect the middle of the diamond immediately, and they answered by bringing up Arroyo from Triple-A Louisville rather than patching the infield with a short-term stopgap.

Arroyo’s Louisville Line

Arroyo, 22, earned the call with a strong run at Louisville. Through 250 plate appearances, he hit.323/.383/.562 with 11 home runs, 9 doubles, 5 triples and 9 stolen bases. Over the past month, he was even hotter, batting.368/.406/.705.

That production matters because Arroyo was not coming up as a speculative depth add. He had been one of the hottest-hitting prospects in Minor League Baseball before the promotion, and his numbers gave the Reds a reason to trust him with his first big league chance while De La Cruz is out.

From Seattle Pick to Reds Debut

Arroyo’s path to this moment began in 2021, when the Mariners took him with the No. 48 overall pick before sending him to Cincinnati in the Luis Castillo deal. His stock took a hit after he missed the entire 2024 season because of a shoulder injury that required surgery, but his strong year at Louisville pushed him back into the picture.

For the Reds, the move is about keeping the infield stable without waiting for the injured list to clear. De La Cruz is on it for at least 10 days, and Arroyo now gets the opportunity the organization built toward when it acquired him.
