Willy Adames Returns as Brewers Open Four-Game Giants Vs Brewers Set
The Brewers opened giants vs brewers on Monday night by returning home from a three-game road trip and starting a four-game set against San Francisco. Milwaukee came in at 35-21 after going 19-7 in May, while the Giants arrived at 23-36 after a 10-18 month.
Adames Back in Milwaukee
Willy Adames is back in Milwaukee with eight home runs for the Giants, giving the series an immediate edge of familiarity. He spent last season with the Brewers and now faces a club that has built a much stronger run through May than San Francisco.
The Brewers lost only one series in May, a 1-2 set against the Dodgers over Memorial Day weekend. San Francisco, by contrast, lost five straight and nine of 11 before closing May with a 19-6 win over the Rockies.
Brewers Carry The Better May
Milwaukee’s lineup has not exploded, but it has produced enough to keep the club ahead in the division race. Jake Bauers leads the Brewers with nine home runs, 10 doubles, 33 RBIs and 30 runs scored in 49 games, while Brice Turang is hitting.263/.391/.438 with seven home runs.
The team numbers show the shape of the season. Milwaukee is batting.242/.328/.359 with a.687 OPS that ranks 25th, yet it has scored 268 runs, sits 11th in the majors in that category and has 60 steals, second-most in the league. The Brewers also carry a 3.17 team ERA, backed by a 3.11 starter ERA and a 3.25 bullpen ERA.
Giants Lean On Schmitt
San Francisco’s offense has been led by Casey Schmitt, who has 12 home runs, 12 doubles and a.294/.332/.548 line across 51 games. Willy Adames has added eight homers, Rafael Devers has seven, and Luis Arraez is hitting.321, but the Giants still entered with a.254/.301/.404 team line, a.705 OPS ranked 14th and only 15 steals, last in the league.
The gap is wider in the standings. Milwaukee’s strong May put it in position to hold at least a four-game lead in the NL Central depending on another result, while San Francisco sat fourth in the NL West. The Brewers also had Brandon Woodruff as their closest pitcher to returning from injury, with Shane Drohan scheduled to start the first game of the series and Milwaukee listing TBD for both of the final two games. Brandon Lockridge was out until mid- to late June with a knee injury, while Jared Koenig was expected back in early June and Logan Henderson in mid-June.
The Giants came with several absences of their own, including Harrison Bader, Jared Oliva and Heliot Ramos, all slated for June returns, while Hayden Birdsong and Angel Zerpa were out for the season. Tyler Mahle, Reiver Sanmartin and Jason Foley were also expected back in June, and the series starts with the teams moving in opposite directions from the same date.
