Cal Poly Baseball wins 5-2, reaches first Super Regional
Cal Poly baseball took the Los Angeles Regional with a 5-2 win over Saint Mary's on Sunday night at UCLA's Jackie Robinson Stadium. The victory sent the Mustangs to their first Super Regional in program history after five previous regional title tries.
Jackie Robinson Stadium Rally
Josh Volmerding held Saint Mary's to two runs over six innings, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out seven. He threw 81 pitches, 45 of them sliders, and generated 11 swing-and-misses with that pitch while finishing with strikes on 75 percent of his offerings.
Volmerding had missed six weeks earlier in the 2026 season with a lower body injury, then returned on May 2 with one inning at UC Irvine. He later worked 2 1/3 innings at Cal State Fullerton, three frames against Long Beach State and four innings in the Big West tournament before getting the start Sunday.
Tayman and Spiridonoff Deliver
Cal Poly erased a 2-0 deficit with one run in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth. Nate Castellon started the first push with an RBI single to left field, Ryan Tayman tied the school record for home runs in a single season with his 18th of the year in the sixth, and Gavin Spiridonoff followed by breaking the tie with a three-run blast.
Nick Bonn finished it with two scoreless, hitless innings for his nation-leading 17th save. Cal Poly finished with its 23rd come-from-behind victory of the season, a number that matched the way this regional run unfolded: one response after another until the bracket belonged to the Mustangs.
West Virginia or Kentucky
Lee called the run a total team effort after Cal Poly won the regional championship. “Great weekend. Hard-fought games. Four really, really good teams,” he said. “Our players responded, and it was different guys each game, so it was a total team effort. Josh, Ryan and Gavin supplied a lot of the theatrics to get us over the top and win this regional.”
Cal Poly will play the winner of the Morgantown Regional in the Super Regional after West Virginia forced an extra game against Kentucky with five runs in the ninth inning of an 11-9 win on Sunday night. The Super Regional is a best-of-three series played Friday through Sunday or Saturday through Monday, and both Cal Poly and Kentucky entered their regionals as third seeds.
For Cal Poly, the larger line now is simple: regional champion, first Super Regional, and one more round that begins with the winner out of Morgantown.
