Andrew Flintoff Takes Over Sydney Thunder Bbl Ahead of Next Summer
Sydney Thunder have turned to Andrew Flintoff for their bbl reset, naming the former England captain as head coach for next summer. The move follows a February change at the top after Trevor Bayliss was stood down, and it puts a 48-year-old with international pedigree into a club coming off two wins and the spoon.
Flintoff and Sydney Thunder
Flintoff said, “I can’t wait to get over there and get started,” as the Thunder announced him for the role. He added, “I’m looking at this with a lot of optimism,” and said, “I want our players to connect with the people that come and see us.”
The new coach arrives with a resume that stretches well beyond this appointment. Flintoff played 79 Tests and 141 ODIs for England from 1998 to 2009, then coached the English Lions and the Northern Superchargers in the Hundred competition. He also played seven matches for the Brisbane Heat during the 2014/25 Big Bash.
Trevor Bayliss Leaves
Bayliss had been in charge for five seasons before the Thunder moved on from him in February. The timing leaves Flintoff inheriting a side that finished last summer with just two wins, a blunt result for a club trying to climb quickly out of the bottom.
Trent Copeland called the appointment “a huge day in the history of Sydney Thunder, and the BBL more broadly.” He also said Flintoff is “a global icon of the game” and “a modern leader,” framing the hire as more than a routine coaching change.
Thunder After February
The Thunder now face the next summer with a new voice, a fresh coaching structure, and a former England captain who already knows the league from his Brisbane Heat stint. Flintoff was hospitalised in 2022 after a car crash while filming a segment for Top Gear, suffering facial injuries and rib damage, but his immediate brief in Sydney is simpler: lift a side that needs a stronger season than the one that ended with two wins.
