Anthony Russo Says Avengers Doomsday Trailer Vision Ends With Secret Wars
The avengers doomsday trailer conversation now points past one film and toward two. Joe and Anthony Russo said on Tuesday that they are in post-production on Avengers: Doomsday and pre-production on Avengers: Secret Wars, while Anthony Russo said the narrative vision is just for Secret Wars.
That leaves December 2026 and December 2027 as the two dates driving Marvel’s next phase from this team. Joe Russo said they will keep working on Doomsday until probably November before handing it to other people for a few weeks.
SXSW London on Tuesday
Joe and Anthony Russo appeared at Deadline’s Reality TV Summit UK at SXSW London with AGBO partner Donald Mustard, and the setting gave them a chance to spell out the split between the two films. Anthony Russo said, “When we did Endgame we were like, we’ve completed it. It was our fourth Marvel film though. We had completed a story arc that we began in the Winter Soldier and for us it was very much intended to be an ending,” which makes this new run feel less like a restart than a controlled follow-on.
He then drew the line even more clearly: “So, I will say this. The stories that we’re focused on now are complete. Doomsday and Secret Wars speak with one another as two films and they form a complete expression. Whether or not we all collaborate with Marvel beyond that is certainly a possibility, but right now, the vision, the narrative vision is just for Secret Wars.”
November on Doomsday
Joe Russo said, “We are doing some work still on Doomsday and will be until probably they rip it out of our hands in November and that just means they have to give it to other people, to finish it for a few weeks, and then we’re in the middle of what we would call pre-production… we like doing many things at the same time,” which means both films are moving at once rather than waiting on a clean handoff between them.
Donald Mustard, who joined AGBO in 2023 to help oversee its push into interactive and immersive experiences, added another layer to the project when he said, “We were all there together kind of figuring out what that movie is and what is going to be seen this Christmas. It’s just an amazing partnership and we’re building all sorts of things together that kind of fuse our approach to telling stories,” while also hinting that interactive elements are in the works for Avengers: Doomsday.
December 2026 and 2027
Avengers: Doomsday is planned for release in December 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars is planned for December 2027. Joe Russo joked, “We’re going to see what we look like in photos in 2028 and then we’ll let you know,” but the real takeaway is simpler: Marvel’s next Avengers pair is being treated as a closed two-film run, not the start of an open-ended sequel machine.
For readers tracking the franchise, that makes the immediate focus narrow. The work now sits on one film in post-production, one in pre-production, and a stated creative plan that stops at Secret Wars.
