An eight-year-old boy died after an a30 crash involving several vehicles on the A30 near Connor Downs, near Hayle, Cornwall, on Friday morning. A five-year-old boy remains in hospital in a critical condition, while police arrested a local man in his 60s on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Emergency services were called shortly before 11:00 BST, and the road stayed shut for about 12 hours while investigators examined the scene. The man suffered minor injuries and has been released under investigation.
Connor Downs collision
Two women in the same car as the boys suffered serious injuries, including one in her 70s. A woman in her 40s was taken to hospital and later sent home.
Det Insp Andy Heath said: “Our thoughts are with those who have been affected by this incident.” He added: “It is not possible to provide detail of the cause of the collision, and I would ask the public not to speculate.”
Roads Policing Team enquiries
Heath also said: “Specialists from the Roads Policing Team and Serious Collisions Investigation Team have continued enquiries through the weekend, and the investigation team will be pursuing several lines of enquiry over the coming weeks.” He said police are seeking witnesses and dash cam footage from the westbound carriageway.
“Our priority at this time is to support those that have been directly affected by this tragic incident and to secure the evidence required for a thorough investigation,” Heath said. The appeal for footage points to the next step for anyone who was on that stretch of the A30 near Hayle on Friday morning.
Witnesses on the westbound carriageway
Police are focusing on evidence from drivers who passed the westbound carriageway shortly before the collision. For anyone with dash cam footage, that material could form part of the enquiries now running through the weekend and into the coming weeks.
The road closure, the arrest and the appeal for footage show the investigation is already moving on two tracks: preserving the scene and gathering new evidence from the public. Anyone who was on the A30 near Connor Downs around the time of the crash now has a clear request from police to come forward.
