Ben Roethlisberger Questions Steelers Plan as Allar Hits 2 Deep Passes
ben roethlisberger was part of the latest Steelers conversation after Drew Allar made a noticeable jump in the team’s second week of OTAs on Friday. The third-round rookie quarterback looked more comfortable in individual work and with his new receivers, a step that keeps his path toward a future quarterback battle in view.
Allar Finds DK Metcalf
Allar’s sharpest reps came on two deep throws. One found DK Metcalf, and another reached Germie Bernard, both with coverage about 30 yards deep.
That was enough for Noah Strackbein to name him one of the week’s winners and to write that the rookie quarterback took a noticeable step forward in his comfort level working individual drills and with his new wide receiver core. He added that Allar got “notably better” from Week 1 to Week 2.
Week 1 To Week 2
Allar was selected by the Steelers in the third round out of Penn State, and the early OTAs have given the team a first look at how quickly he is adjusting. The practice notes point to progress in timing and placement, not just raw arm strength, and that matters for a quarterback trying to build trust with Metcalf and Bernard before the schedule tightens.
Strackbein said, “That included two very nice passes where he put the ball right on the money to DK Metcalf and Germie Bernard, with coverage, about 30 yards deep.” He also wrote, “There’s a long way to go before Allar is a franchise quarterback, but from Week 1 to Week 2, he got notably better.”
Steelers Summer Timeline
The Steelers will hold mandatory minicamp next week, then return for one more set of OTAs from June 8-12. After that comes a six-week break before the team reports to Latrobe for training camp on July 28.
That leaves a clear runway for Allar to keep stacking days before the work gets more serious. Strackbein summed up the upside this way: “That’s quick progress, and if the Mike McCarthy quarterback school is actually going to work, Allar is the perfect project to make it work on.”
