Frederik Andersen Honors Claude Lemieux Death After Game 5
Claude Lemieux death hit Frederik Andersen during Carolina’s postseason run, and the Hurricanes goalie tied that loss directly to his response after Game 5. Andersen said he wanted to make Lemieux proud after Carolina’s 6-1 win over Montreal sent the Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup Final.
Andersen’s Game 5 response
Andersen stopped 23 of 24 shots in the clincher. Afterward, he called reaching the Final “surreal” and thanked the Hurricanes for their support after a “difficult couple of days.”
He also framed the moment around Lemieux, saying, “It’s so special to be able to show up for Lemieux and make him proud, just go out and battle.” He added, “Can’t speak (highly enough) about this team.”
Lemieux’s role in his career
Lemieux was Andersen’s longtime agent and, in Andersen’s words, “like family.” He died earlier this week after being part of the story in Montreal just days before, when he lit the Canadiens’ ceremonial torch ahead of Game 3.
Lemieux’s hockey résumé stretched well beyond that night. He was a four-time champion and a key part of the Canadiens’ 1986 Cup-winning team, which gave the tribute in Montreal extra weight for a player who was already tied closely to Andersen’s life off the ice.
Carolina’s 12-1 run
The 6-1 win pushed Carolina through on a 12-1 run in the postseason. That is the backdrop behind Andersen’s night: a goaltender handling 24 shots, a team moving on with one loss in its last 13 playoff games, and a personal loss he carried into the series’ finish.
For Carolina, the game ended the round. For Andersen, it ended with a tribute that connected the rink in Montreal, Lemieux’s death earlier this week, and a promise delivered in the crease.
