Orange County Sheriff's Department investigators said the women were not using a crosswalk when they were hit. Cruz's friends said she worked in Fullerton, got married in February, and had a young son between 5 and 7 years old.

Friends also said Cruz was a veteran who served in the Army. Her mother was visiting from Guatemala at the time of the crash.

Phillip Sanchez at the scene

Phillip Sanchez, a friend and co-worker of Cruz, described her as “She was a kind person. Good soul. Just recently got married. Just a sad, sad situation. We're all going to miss her dearly, and I'm sure her family is grieving over this as well, more than us.”

Preston, an area resident who witnessed the aftermath, said, “I think it's a risk that almost everybody in this neighborhood has taken for a very long time, and we get accidents about every eight months.”

Authorities said DUI was not suspected and no one was arrested. For residents who cross that stretch without a nearby crosswalk, the crash leaves a recorded set of facts: two dead, one driver still cooperating, and investigators already pointing to where the pedestrians were at impact.
