Shnaider Forces Deciding Set After Sabalenka’s 6-3, 5-1 Lead

Diana Shnaider turned a 6-3, 5-1 hole into a deciding set against Aryna Sabalenka on Wednesday. Shnaider won the second set 7-5 after falling behind 1-4, changing a quarter-final that had been headed toward a straight-sets finish.

Sabalenka’s 5-1 Lead

Sabalenka had won the opening set 6-3 and later led 5-1 in the second before Shnaider started the comeback. The match had looked comfortable for the top seed, but the second set kept extending past the point where she first served for it.

At 5-3, Sabalenka served for the match. Shnaider broke back, and the set moved on instead of ending there. That swing pulled the quarter-final away from a routine finish and into a third set.

Shnaider’s 7-5 Second Set

Shnaider also forced Sabalenka to handle pressure earlier in the set, earning three break points in one game before Sabalenka held. She then landed the No. 4 break point with a wide forehand into the corner, one of the shots that flipped the set back in her favor.

The rally back from 1-4 was the cleanest line through the match. Shnaider did not need a long patch of control; she needed one break, then another, and she took the second set 7-5 to level the French Open quarter-final.

The live report also said the ball was bouncing 10% lower this week than it did last, and described Sabalenka as prone to overhitting during the match. Those conditions left more room for the set to turn once Shnaider got the score back to 5-5 and kept pressure on the next service game.

Maja Chwalińska also reached the semi-finals, adding another qualifier to the later rounds. For Sabalenka and Shnaider, though, the match was no longer about a first-set lead; it had become a deciding-set fight after Shnaider’s recovery from 1-4 down.
