Hope Backs West Indies in Sl Vs Wi World Cup Push
sl vs wi started at 9:30 a.m. in Jamaica with West Indies sitting 10th in the ODI rankings and Sri Lanka sixth. The opening match arrives with both sides trying to protect their route to the 2027 World Cup. Only the eight highest-ranked teams, excluding co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, will take the automatic spots on March 31, 2027.
Shai Hope in Jamaica
West Indies captain Shai Hope said the focus had to stay on execution. “We're here on home soil, and we've been playing really well, so execution is the main thing. Hopefully, we can get a good start tomorrow (today) and get on a roll.”
He also pointed to batting as the area that gives him the most confidence. “I don't want to point fingers at a particular facet, but I just believe the way we've been batting for the last year or two, probably even longer, with the top six being tremendous. Barring the opening pair every now and again, we've been pretty solid and consistent.”
Sri Lanka's warm-up edge
Sri Lanka arrived after scoring over 300 against a Jamaica XI. Charith Asalanka, Kamindu Mendis and Janith Liyanage each made half-centuries, while Dushmantha Chameera took three for eight and Dunith Wellalage took three for 10.
Ryan van Niekerk said the visitors came with intent. “We are here to win, and we've come up with a plan. We've come with some really good intentions.”
That form gives Sri Lanka a sharper recent attacking line than West Indies, who have five defeats in their last six ODIs. West Indies also did not play in the 2023 World Cup, and neither side took part in the last Champions Trophy, so this series opens against a backdrop of unfinished business rather than comfort.
West Indies and Sri Lanka
There is recent Caribbean history here. The last time the teams met in the region was in Antigua in March 2021, when West Indies swept Sri Lanka 3-0 and Hope piled up 258 runs with one century and two half-centuries.
West Indies have another reason to lean on their captain now. Hope has already shown he can control this matchup, and his own answer on the side's strongest area was blunt: “If I had to choose one, maybe our batting.”
