Chaz Coleman Trends Toward Tennessee Volunteers Football Exit
Chaz Coleman’s Tennessee Volunteers Football future is trending toward a departure, and Austin Price said the Penn State transfer is still in the program. But the outlook for the rising sophomore to be on the field this fall is “very, very small.”
Austin Price on Coleman
Price said Tuesday morning that Coleman had not been dismissed, even after Doug Matthews said this past weekend that the EDGE had already been cut loose. The latest read from the Tennessee side is far less decisive than that, but it points in the same direction.
“He’s still in the program,” Price said on 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will. He added, “But at the end of the day, this thing’s headed toward where Doug had it at — which is that the chances of him being on this football team this fall are very, very small.”
He also said, “It’s trending toward a matter of when, not if.”
Chaz Coleman’s Offseason
Coleman transferred from Penn State to Tennessee in January and was one of Tennessee’s biggest portal additions of the offseason. He missed most of spring practice, then did not report on time for summer workouts last week.
Price said Coleman had not been in the weight room and had met with strength coach Derek Owings. He also said, “He’s met with (strength coach) Derek Owings.”
That leaves Tennessee in a holding pattern around a player it expected to factor in on defense. Coleman reportedly dealt with some off-the-field personal issues this offseason, and he suffered a head injury late last season, two details that sit behind the uncertainty now attached to his status.
Tennessee Volunteers Football Roster Watch
Price said, “Both sides are kind of going through the motions and dotting i’s and checking boxes and all of that stuff.” He then added, “I just don’t think it’s going to be a marriage that lasts much longer.”
For Tennessee, the practical issue is simple: Coleman’s status still has not reached a formal ending, but the signs point away from him being part of the team this fall. Until that changes, the Volunteers are operating as if one of their transfer EDGE additions may not be available when the season opens.
