ACCC orders Thermos Recall after 3 vision loss reports

The ACCC has issued a thermos recall for the Thermos 770ml Stainless King Food Jar and 710ml Stainless King Food Jar after warning that the stopper can eject forcefully and cause serious injury. The products were sold in Australia over 13 years, and consumers are being told to stop using them immediately.

The recall notice says the risk includes impact and laceration injuries, and it cites three reports of permanent vision loss after people were struck in the eye. Thermos has said replacement stoppers should be available by July 2026.

Thermos 770ml and 710ml jars

The recalled containers are the Thermos 770ml Stainless King Food Jar and the 710ml Stainless King Food Jar. The ACCC said the stopper does not have a pressure release valve and could eject when the container is opened.

Owners are being told to check the underside of the stopper. The ACCC said, “If the stopper does not have a pressure relief feature on the base, it is an affected product. The stopper is located beneath the stainless-steel lid,”

Retailers and sales period

The items were sold at Big W, Target, Officeworks, Amazon, Bunnings, Mitre 10, Australia Post, BCF, David Jones, The Good Guys, and Harris Scarfe. The sales period ran from July 2009 to December 2022.

That span means some buyers may have owned the jars for years before the recall notice on Thursday. The affected products were available through multiple major retailers, widening the number of households that may still have them in use.

Thermos replacement stopper

Thermos is asking consumers to contact the company to arrange a replacement stopper. The company said it will ask consumers to safely dispose of the affected stopper and send a replacement at no cost, with installation instructions.

Consumers can contact Thermos on 1800 683 363 between 9am and 5pm AEST. The recall gives owners a clear next step: check the stopper under the stainless-steel lid and stop using the jar if it lacks a pressure relief feature.
