Phoenix Crossland Taken to Hospital After Five-Minute Head Clash
phoenix crossland was taken from AAMI Park in a medicab after a head clash five minutes into Newcastle’s match against Melbourne Storm. The Knights then sent their hooker to hospital as a precaution, leaving them to manage the rest of a high-profile contest without him.
Five Minutes at AAMI Park
Five minutes into the match, Crossland was defending out of the scrum when Melbourne’s Joe Chan ran a decoy and clashed heads with him. The contact knocked Crossland out, and he was put on a stretcher before being taken from the field in a medicab.
Kevin Walters said on Fox League: “Doesn’t even see him coming, does he?” He also said there was “no problem at all” with the contact and that Chan hadn’t seen Crossland either.
Neck Stiffness After the Collision
Fox later reported that Crossland was complaining of stiffness in his neck, which is why Newcastle took him to hospital as a precaution. That left the Knights dealing with an early personnel loss before the game had settled into a rhythm.
Melbourne had already hit the scoreboard first through Stefano Utoikamanu to lead 6-0, and the match kept moving while Newcastle adjusted. The early removal of a hooker changes field position, interchange planning, and how quickly a side can reset after the first defensive sequence.
Ponga’s Tackle and the Half-Time Fight
Fourteen minutes into the match, Will Warbrick looked set to score in the corner before Kalyn Ponga stopped him. Walters called it “What a try-saver from Kalyn Ponga, flying through the air,” then added, “... that’s a shoulder charge” before backtracking, a line that lands differently after Ponga was sent off in Origin I for a shoulder charge on Tolu Koula.
Fletcher Sharpe scored for Newcastle minutes after that stop, while Manaia Waitere and Warbrick also crossed for Melbourne. By half-time, Melbourne led 14-12, which left Newcastle in a tighter contest but without Crossland, the one player whose exit came before the game had even found its shape.
