LAPD Shooting Closes 405 Freeway Closure Northbound Lanes

All northbound lanes were shut in a 405 freeway closure in Los Angeles on Friday morning after LAPD officers shot and killed a robbery suspect following a pursuit. Traffic was diverted off at Howard Hughes Parkway just before 5:30 a.m., and the closure was expected to last six to eight hours.

Manchester Avenue and Airport Boulevard

The chain of events started around 4:15 a.m. near Manchester Avenue and Airport Boulevard, where a suspect allegedly assaulted another person with a gun at a 7-Eleven and stole the victim’s glasses. The victim called 911 and gave police location information, allowing officers to catch up with the suspect.

When officers reached him, the suspect refused to get out of the car. The pursuit continued onto the northbound 405 Freeway, where the suspect allegedly fired at officers and officers fired back.

Howard Hughes Parkway

The freeway shutdown included all northbound lanes, along with closures at the Sepulveda and La Tijera boulevards onramps. Howard Hughes Parkway was also closed, forcing traffic off the freeway before the shooting scene was cleared.

The suspect was hospitalized and died of his injuries. No officers were injured. For drivers heading toward the area near LAX, the practical change was immediate: northbound traffic could not continue through the corridor and had to be diverted away from the closure zone.

Summer Lin Reported

Summer Lin reported the breaking news, and the sequence she described leaves one direct public-safety question for motorists: how long the northbound 405 will stay shut before lanes reopen. The answer in the initial report was six to eight hours, which put the closure into the rest of the morning commute.
