Miller Joins Six-Man Plan as Mariners Vs Tigers Opens 10-Day Trip

Mariners vs tigers opens with Seattle starting its 10-day road trip in Detroit after an eight-game win streak was snapped on Wednesday. The trip is the club's longest of the season, and the Mariners will use Bryce Miller and Luis Castillo in a six-man rotation because there is no off day during the stretch.

Seattle's road stretch

Seattle is moving straight into the hardest part of the trip. The itinerary runs through Detroit, Baltimore and Washington DC, and the club still carries a 2.5 game lead over the Athletics after the series win over the Mets.

Miller goes back into the rotation for the first stop, and Castillo follows in the same six-man setup. That gives Seattle a way to cover innings across 10 straight days, with the rotation adjustment built around the lack of a break rather than a one-game matchup in Detroit.

Detroit's rough stretch

Detroit enters with a different kind of pressure. The Tigers started the season as the favorite to win the AL Central and had two straight playoff appearances before this year, but the group has stumbled since Tarik Skubal went on the IL on May 4 with bone spurs in his throwing elbow.

Since then, Detroit has gone 7-21. The offense has been a bigger problem than the record alone shows, scoring just 2.89 runs per game in May and topping five runs only three times. Riley Greene, Dillon Dingler and Kevin McGonigle have been the lone bright spots, while Gleyber Torres and Kerry Carpenter returned from the IL last weekend.

Tigers' rotation pressure

The pitching side has taken hits too. Framber Valdez arrived on a huge free agent contract this offseason, Keider Montero has been forced into a core role in the rotation, and Jack Flaherty has been riding the feel for his breaking pitch.

That mix leaves Seattle facing a Detroit team with pieces back on the roster but still searching for run production. For the Mariners, the first game in Detroit starts a road trip that will test depth, rotation planning and a 2.5-game cushion that can disappear quickly if the trip turns flat.
