Coco Vandeweghe Called Maja Chwalinska 'Pathetic' Before French Open Run
coco vandeweghe once called Maja Chwalinska a "pathetic person" during Wimbledon qualifying, and the Polish player is now one win from the French Open title. Chwalinska reached the final after coming through qualifying and the main draw, a run that has moved her from outside the world's top 100 toward the top 20.
Wimbledon Clash Returns
Four years ago, Chwalinska and Vandeweghe met in the final qualifying round at Wimbledon for a place in the main draw. Chwalinska came from a set down to win, and the match turned on a third-set exchange when Vandeweghe was struck on the body by a ball during a rally at 4-4.
After that point, Vandeweghe shouted, "That was so messed up! You pathetic person." She then won the next point after an error from Chwalinska and added, "That's right, karma." Chwalinska responded, "It's amazing how things turn out."
Chwalinska At Roland Garros
That old exchange has resurfaced as Chwalinska prepares for Saturday's final against Mirra Andreeva. She arrived at Roland Garros ranked outside the world's top 100 and has pushed all the way to the championship match, with a place in the top 20 now within reach.
Chwalinska said ahead of the semi-finals, "I hope there are still some rooms available out there... or that I have enough money, you know? Because I know I earned quite a bit here, but that money doesn't come immediately. We'll see what happens." The practical side of the run is already clear: reaching the final guarantees her at least £1.2million.
Mirra Andreeva On Saturday
If Chwalinska beats Andreeva, she will become only the second player in history to win a Grand Slam title as a qualifier, following Emma Raducanu. Vandeweghe has been retired since 2023, but the Wimbledon episode now sits beside the biggest match of Chwalinska’s career, with the final offering both a ranking leap and a place in the record book.
