Mexico Push Into Fifa Rankings Talk With 2026 Dark-Horse Form

Mexico’s fifa rankings profile has sharpened ahead of the 2026 World Cup, with five wins and two draws in 2026 and back-to-back regional trophies behind them. That run has pushed Javier Aguirre’s team into the dark-horse conversation before they open against South Africa on Thursday, 11 June.

The case for Mexico is built on results, not reputation. They won last summer’s Gold Cup with a 2-1 comeback victory over the USMNT in the final, and three months earlier they lifted the Nations League after beating Canada 2-0 in the semi-final and Panama 2-1 in the final.

Aguirre and Mexico’s route

Aguirre has twice taken Mexico to World Cups before, in 2002 and 2010, and this squad reaches the tournament with a form line that is hard to ignore. Mexico have not lost in 2026, and the mix of five wins and two draws gives them a cleaner recent record than most teams carrying wider expectations into the competition.

Mexico’s group gives them a practical path into the knockouts. Czech Republic and South Korea are also in the section, and if Mexico win the group they will play their round of 32 and round of 16 matches on home soil at the Azteca.

Jimenez Leads the Numbers

Raul Jimenez has been central to that recent surge. He scored a brace in the 2-1 Nations League final win over Panama, taking him to 44 goals in 125 caps for Mexico and leaving him eight goals short of Javier Hernandez’s all-time national record.

Edson Alvarez, the captain and defensive midfielder, fronts a side carrying a simple target after years of near-misses. Mexico made it out of the group stage at every World Cup from 1994 through 2022, but they failed to reach the quarter-finals in that span and finished third in their group on goal difference four years ago.

Mexico’s 40-Year Wait

The pressure now sits on a different benchmark. If Mexico clear the group and then win a knockout match, it would be their first World Cup knockout victory in 40 years, which is the real standard behind the dark-horse label. For a team already unbeaten in 2026 and carrying two recent regional titles, that is the line that will define the month.
