Texas Beats Oregon 11-3, Moves One Win From Omaha — Sam Cozart Baseball

sam cozart baseball: No. 6 Texas beat No. 11 Oregon 11-3 on Saturday in the Austin Super Regional, moving the Longhorns one win from the College World Series. Jim Schlossnagle’s team also put Oregon on the brink of elimination with the field still taking shape around it.

Texas Longhorns Push Oregon Back

Texas handled the game with an 11-3 margin that left Oregon needing to keep the series alive to extend its season. The result gave the Longhorns the kind of cushion that matters in a best-of-three format: one more win and they are through to Omaha.

The score also fits into a larger weekend around the bracket. Three of the top four national seeds were out by Sunday afternoon with super regionals still in progress, which turned every result into more than a local advance or exit.

Georgia’s Path Through Omaha

No. 3 Georgia was already one of the teams through to the College World Series after winning two high-scoring games at Foley Field. It beat No. 14 Mississippi State 13-12 on Friday and 11-9 on Sunday to join No. 16 West Virginia, Ole Miss, and Troy in Omaha.

That matters for Texas because the College World Series field is not reseeded after the super regionals. If the Longhorns advance, they could be pushed into an opening game against the highest seed remaining rather than a softer matchup.

Texas, Omaha, and 2021

Texas has already lived that setup. In 2021, No. 2 Texas was the highest seed remaining in Omaha and opened against No. 7 Mississippi State instead of an unseeded team.

Mississippi State beat Texas 2-1 in that opener behind Will Bednar’s 15 strikeouts over six innings. Texas then won elimination games against Tennessee and Virginia before needing two more elimination wins to reach the finals, where Mississippi State beat No. 4 Vanderbilt 9-0 to win the national title.

That history leaves Saturday’s 11-3 win with a clear edge: Texas controls its own path now, but upsets elsewhere can still shape the first game it gets in Omaha.
