Louis Saha Flags Sunderland’s 3-4 Player Summer Plan
louis saha, Sunderland are heading into a different summer after reaching the Europa League on the final day of the season. Regis Le Bris said the club will need three or four consistent players in different positions to handle what comes next.
The head coach said the schedule will be harder to manage and linked the recruitment plan directly to that burden. His message was simple: the squad will need more reliable depth if it is going to cope with Europe and the league together.
Le Bris and Sunderland
Le Bris said, "We’ll need three or four more consistent players in different positions, so that we can manage the schedule." He also said, "It’s going to be different because, on average, a team who starts in Europe is supposed to lose 10 points in the league. So it’s a big challenge."
That is the practical challenge Sunderland are now building around. The club’s recruitment team has spent the last couple of weeks putting the finishing touches to the summer transfer plan, and Le Bris said the work is centered on keeping the group stable while adding enough quality for the extra load.
Flanks, midfield and attack
Sunderland want to strengthen on the flanks this summer, with Enzo Le Fee having covered on the left several times last season. The club are also likely to add one more central midfielder, while the attack is expected to need attention.
There is uncertainty surrounding Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda, which adds to the need for another layer of cover in forward areas. Le Bris also wants enough cover at full-back, and Dennis Cirkin has already confirmed he is leaving this summer.
Retained list coming
The retained list is expected to be released in the coming days, which will sharpen the shape of the squad before the market opens fully. Sunderland are not planning a repeat of last summer’s major overhaul, but the scale of the next step is still clear: Europe has raised the standard, and the club now need players who can hold it across more games.
Le Bris put it bluntly: "It’s clear, we need to recover quickly, we need to prepare quickly, we need to debrief quickly." He added, "So it’s going to be challenging. But it’s not boring and everybody should be excited."
