Arsenal Parts Ways With Zafar Iqbal Arsenal Departure After February 2024 Hire

Arsenal’s zafar iqbal arsenal departure is immediate. Dr Zafar Iqbal has parted company with the club after only joining in February 2024, ending a short spell in the head of sports medicine and performance role.

The move lands during a run of injury problems that has already forced Arsenal into a fresh look at its medical setup. Dr Iqbal had stepped in after Gary O'Driscoll left for Manchester United a few months before February 2024, following 15 years at Arsenal.

Iqbal’s Short Arsenal Spell

Iqbal arrived with a strong medical background. He had held senior roles at Crystal Palace and Liverpool, spent time at Sp*rs and Leyton Orient, and also serves as chair of the FA Medical Society.

That profile made him a direct replacement for a high-level departure rather than a routine staff addition. O'Driscoll’s exit removed a long-serving figure from Arsenal’s medical department, and Iqbal was brought in to fill the gap soon after.

Injury Review Pressure

Last month Mikel Arteta commissioned Joaquin Acedo, a freelance physiotherapist, to conduct an independent review of Arsenal’s injury situation. The timing gives Iqbal’s exit extra weight because it comes while the club is still dealing with the consequences of repeated fitness setbacks.

Ben White, Gabriel Jesus and Jurrien Timber have all undergone knee surgeries in recent years. William Saliba has battled a persistent back problem, while Gabriel, Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz have required hamstring operations; Havertz has also had a knee procedure, Mikel Merino needed surgery on a broken foot, and Riccardo Calafiori and Martin Odegaard have both missed spells with various complaints.

Jurrien Timber withdrew from Holland’s World Cup squad with a groin problem on the evening of the article. Ten days earlier, Iqbal joined Arsenal’s trophy parade through the streets of Islington, a brief public appearance that now sits close to the end of his time at the club.

Arsenal’s Next Medical Move

Arsenal have not said who will replace him, and the picture should become clearer when the squad returns for pre-season towards the end of July. For now, the club’s medical leadership changes again at the same moment its injury record remains under the microscope.
