John Worsfold Joins Australian Football Hall of Fame With West Coast Legacy

john worsfold was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame on Tuesday, adding formal recognition to a West Coast career that spanned success as both a player and a coach. He enters after a career that made him one of the club’s most significant figures.

The Hall of Fame call reflects what he achieved in two separate roles at the Eagles. Worsfold captained West Coast to its first two premierships in 1992 and 1994, then later coached the club to the 2006 premiership.

Worsfold’s West Coast record

As a player, he was a fierce and committed defender who played 209 games for West Coast and won All-Australian selection twice. Those numbers sit at the center of his Hall of Fame case, along with the leadership he showed in the club’s earliest premiership years.

His coaching run added another layer. Worsfold was appointed before the 2002 season, took West Coast to finals in his first year in charge and stayed on long enough to coach a club-record 281 games before finishing in 2013.

Bill Walker and Tim Evans

The Hall of Fame night also elevated Bill Walker to Legend status, making him the 34th Legend of Australian Football. Tim Evans was inducted as well.

Evans is one of only two players in SANFL history with more than 1000 goals, and he was a four-time premiership player for Port Adelaide in 1977 and 1979-81. Those additions gave the night a wider reach than Worsfold alone, but his place in West Coast history still drove the central recognition.

West Coast now names its club champion award in Worsfold’s honour, a sign that his impact has lasted beyond the 2006 premiership and the 2013 finish to his coaching stint. The Hall of Fame induction simply adds the game’s formal stamp to a record the club had already built around his name.
