Laurent D’Affnay set for Bolton Wanderers F.c. scouting role

bolton wanderers f.c. are set to add Laurent D’Affnay as their new head of European scouting, giving the club a wider push into foreign recruitment as they head into the Championship. The 43-year-old Belgian is understood to have been given the role and is expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks.

D’Affnay and Bolton Wanderers

D’Affnay arrives after seven years at Standard Liege, where he worked since 2017 and spent the last three years as head of recruitment. He also previously worked for Royal Francs Borains, a second-tier Belgian club, and Bolton’s move signals a clear attempt to widen the pool of players they can target.

The appointment fits the club’s recent recruiting structure. Bolton have already been granted two extra slots for players who do not meet the FA’s GBE criteria because of promotion, and they used those places last season on Thierry Gale and Ibrahim Cissoko. Cissoko has since returned to Toulouse.

The first immediate name attached to the change was Dario Saric. Bolton were credited with an interest in the Bosnian midfielder when word of D’Affnay’s arrival broke, and Saric is also wanted by Greek side Iraklis and Championship rivals Lincoln City.

Saric has been on loan in Turkey with Antalyaspor, who are thought to have passed on the option to sign him permanently at the end of that loan. He has 10 international caps, remains under contract to Palermo for another 12 months, and has also played in Italy for Ascoli and Carpi.

Bolton midfield picture

The chase for Saric comes after Bolton already added Scotland Under-21 international David Watson to their midfield this summer. Steven Schumacher also has Josh Sheehan, Xavier Simons, Ethan Erhahon and Ruben Rodrigues available for similar roles, so any new arrival would join a crowded area rather than fill a blank one.

That is where the club’s slot planning becomes relevant. Thierry Gale is now theoretically eligible to move to standard GBE status after meeting the required minutes last season, and if that is rubber-stamped Bolton would have four ESC slots for the 2026/27 campaign. Szabi Schon moved from ESC to GBE status after featuring heavily in 2024/25, then left on loan to Gyor ETO, where the move was later made permanent after the Hungarian club won the league title last month.

Bolton paid £700,000 for Schon in the summer of 2024 and are thought to have received just over £500,000 when Gyor ETO took up the option. D’Affnay’s arrival points to a more aggressive European search, and Bolton’s pre-season meeting with Oldham Athletic on Tuesday, July 21 at 7pm will be the next scheduled run-out for a squad that is already being reshaped around it.
